History of Nando

The village of Nando lies nestled in a small valley. Hidden in the Pinari it is surrounded by a  natural caved stone wall and 7 small gates. The village consists of 3 neighbourhoods and there are still almost 100 houses, many granaries and of course the beautiful mosque in the centre of the village. Some houses have been abandoned by the families but the major part of the village is still occupied. The villages consist of 75 families and 450 inhabitants. Overall the area is almost 2.5 ha. The area for agriculture is at the edge of the village along the road to the other neighbouring villages. The houses in the Pinari and in Nando are basically built with natural caves stone walls and wooden roofs that are plastered with mud. The mud is necessary for the total strength of the construction and to keep it stable and protected.

Today, on most of the houses, this mud skimming has dissipated due to the rain but also because of the endurance of bad maintenance due the lack of water in the period after the harvest for repairing the houses. The lack of maintenance is also caused by the overall difficult living situation in the Sahel zone which makes the young men search for jobs in other areas after the harvest period.
