Yendouma

The village Yendouma Ato is an example of a village which has been integrated into the cliff. Thanks to this sheltered location buildings from a far past have been preserved and are still inhabited.

In 2003, after permission of the “Healthcare Institute” inspector, the construction of a health center was started. The location was determined by the healthcare institute, which is why it is not located in Yendouma Ato but rather in Yendouma Sogol. Because the center is on the border of the regions Sangha and Diankabou the organization of healthcare was difficult at first. The building functions as a first aid post, under care of a nurse and a traveling physician, who has a consulting hour twice a week. Also housed in the center are a midwife practice, a drug store, a treatment room and several rooms with beds to stay overnight. The rooms of this center are organized around a central yard. A shadowy porch connects the rooms and also offers a sheltered waiting area for the visitors.

The yard was originally intended to be a garden, which was to be kept by the guard. Next to the hospital a well was dug. The building was a successful accommodation, however this project has clarified to SDO that a larger acceptance and responsibility from a local organization is necessary in order to organize the healthcare.
